I don’t know what it is about cooking in a cast iron skillet, but it just makes everything seem more homemade and authentic.
Like you were back with your great grandmother making breakfast for the family, hand squeezing fresh oranges for juice to go with your homemade Skillet Cinnamon Rolls without a care in the world.
In today’s reality of hurried drive through breakfast burritos, it’s nice to take a break from the business of being busy to stop and savor the simple things in life; like the memories a cast iron skillet can bring.
Of course, you could always make your family cinnamon rolls out of a can. Heck, you could even bake your cinnamon rolls from a can in your skillet and that would be a step in the right direction, but I promise if you set aside one Saturday to make these from semi-scratch, you’ll feel accomplished with a sense of pride as you set them out for your friends or family that can only come from making something authentic.
Serve them directly from the skillet and they not only stay warm and gooey, but they look legit. Just like your great grandmother’s used to look.
And who knew she wasn’t making her dough from scratch?!?
Oh, the secrets that come from some of your most treasured recipes.
Skillet Cinnamon Rolls
- 1 package (16 ounces Pillsbury Hot Roll Specialty Mix)
- 1/2 cup butter (softened)
- 1 cup light brown sugar (firmly packed)
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 4 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 1/4 cup butter (softened)
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- Prepare the hot dough mix according to package directions. Set aside for about 5 minutes.
- Roll the dough into a large rectangle and spread the softened butter on top. Mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle it over the butter.
- Roll the dough up tightly, starting at one long end, an cut into 12 slices. Place the rolls, cut sides down, in a lightly greased cast iron skillet. * A 12 inch skillet will make all 12 rolls. I used 2 smaller skillets and made 2 servings. *
- Cover loosely with plastic wrap and a cloth towel and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, for about 30 minutes until the rolls have doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Uncover the rolls and bake 20-25 minutes until the centers of the rolls are golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
- In a mixing bowl, beat together the icing ingredients. Drizzle over the warm rolls once out of the oven.
We’re not even going to talk about how good your kitchen will smell as the Skillet Cinnamon Roll aroma wafts through your home.
